 | Portrait of Mary Kate (Vahey) Walsh - oil, by Ethel R. Foster, 1938 Oil on canvas, signed upper right 'E R Foster '38' (initials run together; signature partly hidden under the frame until Craig moved the canvas in April 2024). Mary was about 39. Family tradition: an art teacher at the Manchester Institute of Arts and Sciences, where Mary worked as a maid, painted her. Her husband Dudley was the Institute's caretaker (1942 draft card; 1940 census 'art gallery'). The artist is identified as Ethel Robinson Foster (1881-1963) of Concord, NH - Art Students League, charter member of the New Hampshire Art Association, exhibited at the Manchester Institute and the Currier Gallery; her photograph collection is at the New Hampshire Historical Society. Correspondence with Karen Papineau, Currier Museum, March-April 2024.
Provenance: kept by Dudley's son Dinny and his wife Emily, who - by her own account - could not stand looking at it. On one of Craig's visits to Manchester Emily pulled it out of a closet and said that, as Mary's grandson, he should have it. It now hangs at the end of Craig and Marjorie's hallway in Honolulu, where he sees it many times a day and loves it.

 | Private Harold Sydney Bushby - AI-enhanced and colourised impression of his WWI portrait AI-ENHANCED IMAGE - NOT A PHOTOGRAPH. Made in October 2026 by Craig Walsh with ChatGPT from the grainy halftone portrait held by the City of Fremantle Local History Centre (see the original image on this page). It is meant to suggest what Harold probably looked like; the AI has filled in detail that the original does not contain, so the fine features, skin and colours are a best guess.
Known errors: the cap badge, collar and buttons have been drawn as British flaming-grenade badges. As a private in the 11th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force, Harold would have worn the AIF Rising Sun badge and plain Commonwealth buttons.

 | Private Harold Sydney Bushby, 11th Battalion AIF - portrait about 1915-1918 (original) This is the historical image: a newspaper-style halftone portrait of Harold in uniform and peaked cap, as held by the City of Fremantle Local History Centre in its "Fremantle Soldiers, Sailors and Nurses of the Great War" collection. The grain comes from the printing screen, not from damage.
Courtesy of the City of Fremantle Local History Centre (https://history.fremantle.wa.gov.au/nodes/view/21055), which also has a full biography of Harold. Shown on this family history site with thanks and credit to the Centre.
