On Sunday 4 Aug 1907 George Hailele, a stevedore aged about 26 who had asked James for permission to learn to oil the engine, was killed on his first day when his sleeve caught an oil cup on the crank shaft of the triple-expansion pumping engine. That morning James had shown him how to steady himself - "one hand for yourself, and one for the machinery." James was in the boiler room when it happened. "My first impulse," said Wilkinson, "when I saw the body was to gather it up. Then I reflected that the man was dead, and assistance to him impossible, and that I had better notify the police and the coroner." The Advertiser said the accident was "wholly without fault of his", but that he "was very much affected by the accident". Two years later the Evening Bulletin wrote that his health had been failing ever since. In the family story, as Albert told it on his 1961 tape, James died of a blow to the head while testing a fire hydrant; his death certificate gives general paresis. |

| Notes |
- 1900 Census: Living aboard S.S. Claudine, docked in Kailua/Kona. He was First Engineer. The only other person on board at the time of the census was the engineer, William Lycett born 1875 from Australia. Both James and William Lycett spoke English and Hawaiian. James was born in April, 1869 in England and immigrated to Hawaii in 1888 when he was 19. He was a naturalized citizen. His parents were both born in England. He was married (and it looks like someone noted that he had one child, and then tried to erase or smudge the "1"). At the time of the census he was 31 years old. Census ED5, page 154.
Per Allen W. Hoof, Archivist, State of Hawaii (e-mail dated July 2, 2003): SS Claudine was built on the Clyde in 1890 and steamed from Glasgow to Hawaii in the same year. She was registered in Hawaii (number 291 (new)) and ownership was transferred to the Wilder Steamship Company. She carried the Hawaiian annexation delegation to San Francisco following the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy in 1893; grounded on a reef outside Honolulu Harbor in 1907; and was scrapped in 1928.
We made a phone call and determined that Wilder Steamship Company went out of business in 1905. Since SS Claudine remained in service after that, it is apparent that ownership was transferred to another company, but we have no records of such transactions after 1900. Perhaps that information would be in Lloyd's Register.
July 8, 2003: Lloyd's Register confirmed that the S.S. Claudine was a steel screw schooner rigged steamer built by Napier, Shanks & Bell in Glasgow in 1890. It had triple expansion engines with three cylinders, built by Dunsmuir & Jackson, Glasgow. Tonnages and dimensions first recorded: 785 gross tons, 431 net tons, 623 underdeck, 184.0 feet length, 32.0 feet breadth, 15.9 feet depth. Official number 127431, call letters KPWG. 1906-07 transferred to Inter Island Steam Navigation Co., Ltd. 1929-30, listed as broken up.
- I contacted June Watanabe - who writes the Kokua Line column in the Honolulu Star Bulletin - for her help in getting information from St. Andrew's Cathedral about James William Wilkinson's marrige. - THE TRAINING SHIP CLIO (research of 22 October 2026)
CONCLUSION: James is very probably the "J. W. Wilkinson" aboard the Industrial Training Ship Clio in the 1881 census. The identification is circumstantial: no record yet found names him in full as a Clio boy. Every check below points the same way and none points against it.
THE SHIP. The Clio was an old wooden warship moored in the Menai Strait off Bangor and run, from 1877 to 1920, as an industrial training ship by the City of Chester and Border Counties Training Ship Society. Boys sent to her were trained for the sea.
THE 1881 ENTRY. Census night 3 April 1881: "WILKINSON J W, Scholar, M, 11, Training For The Sea", born Lancashire, Manchester (RG11/5574, folio 123, page 11; FreeCEN transcription RG11/5574A, folio 118, page 1). There were 244 boys aboard, 78 of them born in Manchester. He is the only Wilkinson aboard, and one of very few boys entered by initials rather than full forenames.
WHY HE FITS
- Born 24 Feb 1869 in Manchester; his mother died in 1875; his father Joseph, organ builder, remarried Elizabeth Pennington at CHESTER on 7 May 1879. In 1881 Joseph was at 28 Lyon Street, Chester, with Elizabeth and a son Henry, WITHOUT James or his brother Joseph (b. 1871). The Clio drew its boys from Chester and the border counties.
- He went to sea: by 1888 he was in Honolulu, a fireman on the Inter-Island steamer Mikahala by 1890, and later a chief engineer.
- In Honolulu he was styled "J. W. Wilkinson", the same form as the Clio entry (death notices, Pacific Commercial Advertiser, Hawaiian Star and Evening Bulletin, 7 Jul 1909).
- The 1900 census (aboard SS Claudine) says he immigrated to Hawaii in 1888, aged 19.
THE AGE. On census night James was 12, not 11. Ages on institutional returns were often entered by staff and are frequently a year out. A Carnarvon and Denbigh Herald report (1 Jun 1888, p. 6) notes that boys under twelve could be admitted if the committing board paid a weekly sum.
RULING OUT THE OTHERS (FreeBMD birth index, Sep 1866 to Dec 1871, searched 22 Oct 2026; 1881 census searched on Ancestry)
- James William Wilkinson, Jun qtr 1869, Manchester 8d 205, is OUR James and the ONLY James Wilkinson of any kind registered in Manchester district 1866-71. Chorlton district has only James E. Wilkinson, Mar qtr 1866 (aged 15 in 1881).
- No James Wilkinson born in Manchester about 1867-71 appears anywhere in the 1881 census index except, as "J. W.", on the Clio.
- John William Wilkinson, Dec qtr 1868, Manchester 8d 285: in 1881 at home with his parents William and Julia in Little Bolton (Ancestry record 9936611); in 1891 a labourer in Barrow-in-Furness with his father William. Ruled out.
- John William Wilkinson, Dec qtr 1870, Manchester 8d 319: a John William Wilkinson aged 4 died Mar qtr 1875, Manchester 8d 270. Probably dead.
- Joseph Whitehead Wilkinson, Sep qtr 1869, Chorlton 8c 671: two Manchester-born Joseph Wilkinsons of about that age are at home with family in 1881 (son of Jane, Moss Side; son of Thomas and Susannah, Bradford, Manchester); INFERENCE: one of them is him. A Joseph W. Wilkinson, born Hulme, was an iron dresser near Manchester in 1891.
- Joseph William Wilkinson, Dec qtr 1871, Manchester 8d 266: he would have been 9, not 11, in 1881; not placed.
- Other J. W. Wilkinsons born 1866-71 were registered outside Manchester (Bury, Salford, Ashton, Oldham, Bolton); the Clio entry says born Manchester.
ARRIVAL IN HAWAII (LEAD, NOT CONFIRMED). The Daily Bulletin, Honolulu, 4 Jun 1888, p. 2, lists "Messrs. Wilkinson, Donwell, Carlos Morton" among those who came by the brig Hazard, from New Zealand by way of Jaluit. Whether this is James is not established; the full column has not yet been read. https://www.loc.gov/resource/sn82016412/1888-06-04/ed-1/?sp=2
STILL TO COME
- The Clio's admission and discharge registers would settle it (full name, age, parent, committing court). Anglesey Archives (Ifan Roberts, Oct 2026) hold none. Enquiries are out to Gwynedd Archives, Cheshire Archives and the National Maritime Museum's Caird Library (sent 22 Oct 2026). Cheshire Archives replied automatically on 22 Oct 2026 that they are closed while moving to new premises and reopen on 13 Jan 2027 (Chester) and March 2027 (Crewe), so no answer from them before then. Denbighshire Archives hold Clio papers 1880-87 including annual reports.
- Emrys Wyn Roberts, "The 'Clio', 1877-1920" (2011, ISBN 9781845241803), ordered October 2026: check its sources for surviving registers and any mention of Wilkinson.
- His 1900 naturalization petition (Hawaii, vol. 1, p. 17) may name the ship and date of arrival.

 | "New Units at Kalihi Pumping Station Begun" - Honolulu Star-Bulletin - 14 Jun 1927 - Page 1 Erection of two new pumping units at the Kalihi water pumping station began on Monday 13 June 1927 under the direction of Honolulu Iron Works engineers: a 4,000,000-gallon high-pressure pump and a 10,000,000-gallon low-pressure pump, both of the horizontal cross-compound type. "It is planned to repair the pump of the vertical triple expansion type, which has been on duty for many years, and use it as a stand-by and to handle lighter loads."
That old vertical triple-expansion engine is almost certainly the 1899 steam pump now known as the "Old Man of Kalihi", which the Board of Water Supply still keeps in the Historical Room of the Fred Ohrt Water Museum - and very likely the engine James Wilkinson ran as engineer at the station (directories 1904-05; the George Hailele accident of 4 Aug 1907). This article explains how it survived: instead of being scrapped when the new units arrived, it was repaired and kept as a stand-by inside the enlarged station, whose present building (the plaque says erected 1927) still stands at King Street and Waiakamilo Road. Whether the 1927 building was literally built around the old engine is not stated here and has not been confirmed.
