- Fourth son of Harry and Annie Hannah (nee Crumpler) Vine. His mother registered the birth at Stockbridge on 15 Nov 1887, giving his father's occupation as thatcher (Bob Vine). Telegraph messenger in 1901; in 1911 a groom at Weddington Hall, Nuneaton, Warwickshire, in the household of Henry Cunliffe Shawe, whose son Captain Charles Shawe of the Rifle Brigade he later served as manservant and chauffeur.
He sailed with Captain Shawe from Southampton on the Oceanic on 13 Nov 1912 and reached Auckland on the RMS Makura on 17 Dec 1912. At Government House, Wellington, Shawe was Military Secretary to the Governor, Lord Liverpool.
He enlisted in the 1st New Zealand Expeditionary Force on 14 Aug 1914 (service number 15/92), a fortnight after his son was born in England, and was one of the first ANZACs: Egypt, Gallipoli (evacuated sick with dysentery, 15 Aug 1915), Malta, England, then the Western Front. He was awarded the Military Medal. He married Winifride Annie Edwards on 28 Sep 1915 at West Dean near Chichester while convalescing in England.
He died of pneumonia at Wellington Hospital on 8 Jul 1922, aged 34; his service record says "Death due to war service". His grandson Bob Vine believes the gas on the Western Front was the underlying cause. Buried at Karori Cemetery, Wellington (105 G CH ENG2).
