Loading... Edith Wyser – Register of Admissions to the Destitute Asylum
This document, from the collection of the State Records of South Australia, shows Edith Wyser, "native born," age 14 1/2 years, sentenced to the reformatory school in Magill "until she shall attain the age of 18 years as an uncontrollable girl." It appears that her father arranged for her admission, and that they lived at the time on Grenfell Street, Adelaide. The "recommendation" column reads "Magistrates Mandate" - she was admitted on a magistrate's order. (This was read in 2009 as a magistrate named "Masedale"; a closer reading in Oct 2026 shows it is the word "Mandate", not a name.) Her religion is entered as "Ch. Engd" (Church of England).
Admission was on 27 Nov 1882. The "time of leaving" column reads "Dec 23/82" and the "where goes to" column reads "Released on petition" (the word Cathy Bushby could not read in 2009) - so after less than a month someone, presumably her family, petitioned successfully for her release.
